Layoffs in Tech are grabbing headlines every week. While the ups and downs of an economic cycle is expected, we have not had the current magnitude of layoffs since the dot com bubble burst in 2001. The key message that any layoffs delivers is that individuals are dispensable in the corporate world and that everyone has to figure out a way to bring value consistently in the long run in an obvious fashion– can’t rely on past laurels, always be looking to add value if you want to be in the corporate workforce.

Layoffs are a hot topic because the employees sometimes get into a mindset of us versus them (i.e senior management). This is a natural human reaction and many people get sucked into it. I believe a lot of it is driven by insecurities and difficulty of dealing with uncertainties. What I think about, is a future where humans and technology have evolved to a point where meeting the basis needs of food, clothing and shelter is a certainty which will allow our species to focus on our ‘true’ interests and creativity to invent/make things better– continue our never ending quest of conquering infinity.

How do we get there? A possible path that will feel theoretical: It has to start in the mind, inside of you to begin thinking like that. To focus on building skills that interest you and on a problem that you want to solve– to use the “corporate phrase” of obsessing over the problem regardless of the outcome.
